Saying Goodbye

I've owned my Hamilton Beach blender for more than 20 years. I purchased it  shortly after college so that my housemates and I could make daiquiris and Midori coladas (my drink I learned from my mother). The plastic blender jar, blender lid, gasket, and blades were disassembled, washed and assembled for the next experiment.

The blender has traveled with me from one residence to another for two decades. Before  I owned a food processor or electric mini chopper I used my blender - sometimes successfully, sometimes not as successfully. It was an essential, trusted and reliable piece equipment.

Several months ago I noticed that sometimes despite meticulous seating of the blender's jar in the base the unit would not blade assembly didn't move. I would turn off the blender, re-seat  the blender jar in the base and try again. Success!

Several weeks ago the blender the  lack of synchronization between the base unit and the blade assembly began occurring more frequently. An odor similar to burning rubber began to emanate from the blender. After a sipping "smoothie" that had still had chunks of fruit present that I was going have to say goodbye to my beloved blender. I didn't want to risk shorting out the blender or burning out the motor ( I have developed a healthy respect for electricity after burning the motor of another kitchen appliance - but that's another blog post).

After walking the aisles of a few stores I opted for a Black & Decker blender. Why Black & Decker? I've found some of their kitchen products (e.g. mini  chopper) to be functional, easy to assemble, with good safety features, and reasonably priced.

On a bright and clear Sunday morning, I placed the Hamilton Beach blender in my recycle bin and moved the Black & Decker blender in the space previously occupied by the Hamilton Beach blender. The Black and Decker blender has a glass jar, and 12 speeds (the Hamilton Beach had a plastic jar and 7 speeds). The power cord also tucks away neatly under the base of the blender.

My first test with new blender was a smoothie featuring almond milk, banana, pineapple and a few other ingredients. The ingredients were blended smoothly, quickly, and  relatively quiet.  Good for a first try. The real test will come when it's time to make margaritas,  daiquiris and coladas this summer.

Be well,
