Food Holidays for the week of 17 August 2015

Which holidays did you celebrate last week? I indulged a in a slice of  lemon meringue pie last week. The lemons were delicious!

August 17  National Vanilla Custard Day
August 18  National Soft-Serve Ice Cream Day
August 19  Potato Day  AND National Hot & Spicy Food Day
August 20  Lemonade Day  AND National Chocolate Pecan Pie Day
August 21  National Pecan Torte Day
August 22  National “Eat a Peach” Day AND National Spumoni Day
August 23  National Spongecake Day

I've also seen calendars that list  August 18 as National Ice Cream Pie Day and August 21 as National Sweet Tea Day.

Chiles, a primary ingredient in hot & spicy have been researched and cataloged. Chiles, aka chili peppers and chillis, range from the bell peppers to ghost peppers.

Chiles are fruits (they have seeds). The heat we experience is due to capsaicin  and four related chemicals, collectively called capsaicinoids. When consumed in large quantities capsaicin can cause pain, inflammation and can burn the skin on contact. I found this out the hard way several years ago when I handled a scotch bonnet pepper a coworker brought me from his garden.

Which holidays will you celebrate this week? Which are a surprise to you? Share your comments below.

Have a great week!

Be well,
Technicolor girl
