Keeping the Salt

I don't often receive emails written directly to me so when I saw that the email began with my given name I paid attention.  The email was from made from Made from Rhode Island (RI) - the state where I spent most of my childhood. Even more reason to pay attention.

The owners of Made from RI asked if I would be willing to test a product one their artisans developed - a salt shaker.  My training and years of experience as a Product Manager initially made me hesitant to say "yes". What if the salt shaker broke? What if I didn't like the salt shaker?  How would I share the feedback?  Could I share the feedback?  In the interim, a newspaper in Chicago asked its readers if Rhode Island actually existed. I imagined Roger Williams and the crafters of the Declaration of Independence  silently screaming (Rhode Island is the 13th state in  formation of the United States and Roger Williams signed the Declaration of Independence  on behalf of Rhode Island Providence Plantations - the state's official name). I even sent a good-natured Tweet to the article's writers introducing myself and telling them that I had grown up in Rhode Island an
d that the state actually existed.  I said "yes to the Made from RI request. And then my attention was diverted to holiday cooking , snow removal, and preparing to attend classes.

A box arrived in the mail. I glanced at the address and knew it was a surprise package from my mother.  Instead, it was the salt shaker om from Made from RI.

It was sleek, smooth, ceramic and dark blue in color I liked that the shape;didn't look like a typical salt shaker. I noted that the place to add salt was on the bottom as well as the holes from which the salt would dispense.  But how to test it? Then I remembered, my main reason for not keeping salt on the table was that it often clumped when it was humid . Yes, I added rice to the salt shaker, but it still meant the salt shaker would have tapped/shaken hard  to get access to the salt.

I added the salt to the shaker and then I purposely placed on a table  not far from plants that I water regularly and have a humidity tray for one plant. Then I ignored the shaker for several weeks as I continued to water my plants.

I recently used the shaker to add salt to a dish I was preparing. The salt dispense easily. The shaker was easy to hold and easy to clean.  I smiled. I shaked out more salt - easily.

According to the Made from RI website the shaker is available in other colors, can be purchased independently or as part of a set. It is ceramic, so some care is needed, but no more care that I would use with any other ceramic or glass salt shaker.  I'm grateful to have an alternative for keeping my salt. Thanks to Made from RI for allowing me to test  this product!
