Food Holidays for the week of 12 January

Are you ready for a new week of holidays to celebrate?  This week's food holidays run the gamut from sweet to savory.

  • January 12: Curried Chicken Day
  • January 13: National Peach Melba Day AND National Gluten-Free Day
  • January 14: National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day
  • January 15: Strawberry Ice Cream Day
  • January 16: National Fig Newton Day AND International Hot & Spicy Food Day
  • January 17: Hot-Buttered Rum Day
  • January 18: Peking Duck Day

  • Seeing pastrami on the list made me wonder about its origin. According to Wikipedia, pastrami was originally created as a way to preserve meat before modern refrigeration. It is usually made from beef, pork, mutton or turkey. The raw meat is brined, partially dried, seasoned with various herbs and spices, then smoked and steamed. Growing up, a pastrami sandwich was a treat that we enjoyed at a local restaurant. In recent years, I have enjoyed turkey pastrami sandwiches.

Which holidays will you celebrate this week? Which holidays are a surprise to you?  Have a great week!

    Be well,
