Food holidays for the week of 15 June

Which food holidays did you celebrate last week? Did you know that June is National Papaya Month, National Steakhouse Month, and National Turkey Lover’s Month? That's a lot of love!!

The week's lineup of food holidays spans fruits, vegetables, animal protein, and libations:

June 15: National Lobster Day AND World Gin Day
June 16: National Fudge Day
June 17: Eat All Your Veggies Day AND National Apple Strudel Day
June 18: National Cherry Tart Day AND International Picnic Day AND National Sushi Day
June 19: National Dry Martini Day
June 20: National Vanilla Milkshake Day
June 21: National Peaches and Cream Day

What a coincidence that a World Gin Day and National Dry Martini Day are celebrated the same week. The classic martini is made with  gin, vermouth and garnished with an olive or a lemon twist.  According to Wikipedia, by 1922 the Martini reached its most recognizable form in which London Dry Gin and dry vermouth are combined at a ratio of 2:1, stirred in a mixing glass with ice cubes, with the optional addition of orange or aromatic bitters, then strained into a chilled cocktail glass.

To be classified as London Dry Gin, by law, the gin must be produced by re-distilling the spirit in a pot still with juniper and other botanicals. Once the re-distillation is complete no other flavorings can be added.

A Dry Martini is  is made with dry, white vermouth. The ratio of gin to dry vermouth has varied from 3:1 to as much as 100:1
