Skating and Whiskey

It's the first day of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere. I awakened to steady snowfall and radio reports of school closings. My faith in the Old Farmer's Almanac grows steadily - they predicted snow last week and this week for various sections of the East Coast of the United States.  I won't complain too
much - friends and family in New England tell me that they still don't see land.

I've decided to shift my attention from the snow to  thinking about the weekend. The weather prediction is in the 60s and I'm looking forward to skating. Roller skating - specifically Roller Derby Skating.

Recently, Catoctin Creek Distillery posted on Facebook , "We are a proud sponsor of NOVA Roller Derby and want to give you a chance to check out Catoctin Creek's very own Bottling Maven, Nicole (aka Detective Skate Beckett,) as she hits the track Saturday, March 21 with the Metro Misfits as they take on the Beltway Betties in this year's home team season opener at The Michael and Sons' Sportsplex at Dulles.Want to win 2 free tickets? Leave a comment letting us know your favorite way to drink our Roundstone Rye. Winners will be chosen at random, and announced on Wednesday March 18!"

The comment I posted was, "Neat, please. Go, Nicole, go!"

On 18 March Catoctin Creek was announced Technicolor Dining was one of the ticket winners. Thank you Catoctin Creek and thank you kitchen gods! I remember watching Roller derby matches  on television with my mom when I was child.

I  am confident that Nicole (who  I know by personal experience is very knowledgeable about spirits and wine) and her Metro Misfits teammates will start the season off on a high note.

Curious about rollery derby? Want to see Nicole and her fellow Metro Misfits in action? Ticket can be purchased at, http://www.brownpapertickets.com/profile/86286

If you see me at the event. please say hello.

Be well,

Food Holidays for the week of 19 January

How many food holidays did you celebrate last week? Which food holiday did you most enjoy celebrating?  This week's lineup  includes homage to a beloved poet:

  • January 19: National Popcorn Day
  • January 20: National Buttercrunch Day, National Cheese  Lover’s Day, National Granola Bar Day AND National Coffee Break Day
  • January 21: New England Clam Chowder Day
  • January 22: National Blonde Brownie Day
  • January 23: National Pie Day
  • January 24: National Peanut Butter Day
  • January 25: National Irish Coffee Day AND Burns Night

  • Burns Night, according to Wikipedia is an evening celebrating the poetry and life of the Scottish poet Robert Burns.  The event can be informal or formal, and may feature  scotch broth or potato soup,  "neeps and tatties" (turnips and potatoes) boiled and mashed separately, haggis, and Scotch. whisky. Mr. Burns' poetry is often recited throughout the evening, including Burns' poem, Address to a Haggis when the haggis is first brought to the table.

So, what is haggis? Haggis is described as a savory pudding containing sheep's heart, liver and lungs (called "pluck"), minced with onion, oatmeal, suet spices, slat, and mixed with salt. Traditionally it was encased in sheep's stomach and simmered for approximately three hours. Today, haggis is most often prepared in a sausage casing rather than the sheep's stomach.

I discovered that a local restaurant, Oatlands, is hosting a Burns Night dinner featuring none other than Catotcin Creek Distillery. Which  would be more exciting trying the haggis, trying the whisky? Or perhaps kilt watching?

Which food holidays will you celebrate? Which are holidays are a surprise to you? Share your comments below.  Have a great week!

    Be well,
