Pi/Pie Day

Happy Pi Day! Pi, the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter, has been represented by the Greek letter "π" since the mid-18th century, though it is also sometimes spelled out as "pi". I like that this mathematical constant is celebrated in a number of ways on this day including reciting pi and eating pie.

This year has special significance because at 9:26:53 The date is 3.141592653. It happens once a century. I think my geometry teacher would be be glad to see that I remembered.

Are you reciting pi? Eating pie? Baking pie?  Which is your favorite pie? Share your comments below.

Food Holidays for the week of 19 January

How many food holidays did you celebrate last week? Which food holiday did you most enjoy celebrating?  This week's lineup  includes homage to a beloved poet:

  • January 19: National Popcorn Day
  • January 20: National Buttercrunch Day, National Cheese  Lover’s Day, National Granola Bar Day AND National Coffee Break Day
  • January 21: New England Clam Chowder Day
  • January 22: National Blonde Brownie Day
  • January 23: National Pie Day
  • January 24: National Peanut Butter Day
  • January 25: National Irish Coffee Day AND Burns Night

  • Burns Night, according to Wikipedia is an evening celebrating the poetry and life of the Scottish poet Robert Burns.  The event can be informal or formal, and may feature  scotch broth or potato soup,  "neeps and tatties" (turnips and potatoes) boiled and mashed separately, haggis, and Scotch. whisky. Mr. Burns' poetry is often recited throughout the evening, including Burns' poem, Address to a Haggis when the haggis is first brought to the table.

So, what is haggis? Haggis is described as a savory pudding containing sheep's heart, liver and lungs (called "pluck"), minced with onion, oatmeal, suet spices, slat, and mixed with salt. Traditionally it was encased in sheep's stomach and simmered for approximately three hours. Today, haggis is most often prepared in a sausage casing rather than the sheep's stomach.

I discovered that a local restaurant, Oatlands, is hosting a Burns Night dinner featuring none other than Catotcin Creek Distillery. Which  would be more exciting trying the haggis, trying the whisky? Or perhaps kilt watching?

The food holidays for the week of 1 December include:
  • December 1: National Pie Day
  • December 1: Eat a Red Apple Day
  • December 2: National Fritters Day
  • December 3: National Apple Pie Day

As I stated above, I enjoy egg nog. A dear friend of the family, Mrs. Meadow, made egg nog from scratch when I was a child.  I was in my teens when I first had a sip  of Mrs. Meadow's egg nog. Despite her cautionary warning that I sip it slowly, I quickly asked for water to cool my burning throat.   I was certain the line, "But I'm all lit up like a Christmas tree", from the song "Merry Christmas Baby" was a reference to Mrs. Meadow's egg nog.  Mrs. Meadow passed a few years ago, but the memory of her egg nog remains.

Many thanks to Food Stories for cataloging the food holidays.
